We've just heard that Michael Hendry's wife has arranged a private plane to get the Japan Q School boys from the Gold Coast to Sydney. Shows just how important the Emirates Australian Open is to our players. Travel safe boys... but hurry!

Back 9 playing far easier for round 1 than the front 9 with 85 birdies already today compared with the 36 on the front. If you are at The Lakes GC a hole worth visiting is the par 4 13th. It has been set up with the tees forward and is only 285mtrs long making it drivable and is currently the easiest hole on the course.

Good to see Channel Seven showing all 4 days on free to air. Looking at the scores the back nine appears easier than the front at this stage

I just ran into Paul Sheehan in the car park. He found his way onto an earlier flight from Japan and is good to go at 1.15. Good news!

Just hoped in the cart with Langers, Tournament Director for the PGA Tour of Australasia. He says that with today's set up and conditions the par 5's at 11, 14 & 17 are all reachable in two. This may explain why the scoring is better coming in.

Gareth Paddison has been in great form lately. After winning the Victorian PGA Championshp in February he's gone on to finish third at the Talisker Masters and T16 at the BMW New Zealand Open. Lets hope he can keep it going this week.

Looks like Tom Watson is in a bit of trouble on hole 6. He has hit it over the back of the green om his approach and has to chip it over a fence to get back to the green.

Unlucky for Max McCardle he broke his 9iron on his first hole. But because it happened during the normal course of play he is allowed to have it repaired or replaced.

Tom Watson came away from the 6th with a bogey. Not a bad result considering where he was after his approach.

Scoring is slow out there for the afternoon groups, the wind playing its part. The best out on course are Won Joon Lee -2, Josh Geary -2, Daniel Fox -2. Its going to take a great round for anybody to match Senden from this morning.

Just on the 11th where Bowditch has walked to the green to inspect before he took his approach shot. It proved a good choice as he hits it close with a great chance for birdie.

Higginbottom plays a nice shot from the greenside bunker on 15. The ball just caught to much of the rough and didn't roll down to the hole as close as he would have liked.

Our only winner on the US PGA Tour this year, Marc Leishman, has had a solid day. He's 2-under with two to play. Still a chance for another birdie.

That ace from Fraser takes him to -3 for the round. He is on fire at the moment with four birdies and and eagle in his last five holes. Could he equal Senden with three holes to go?
