Brown records break through victory at NSW Open
Victorian Anthony Brown has won the 2014 Mazda NSW Open after a two hole playoff at Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club.
Victorian Anthony Brown has won the 2014 Mazda NSW Open after a two hole playoff at Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club.
Starting the day three shots off the lead, Brown went quietly about his business to shoot 3-under 69 and tie New Zealand's Josh Geary at 14-under 274 at the end of regulation play.
After 15 holes Brown had caught overnight co-leaders Geary and James Nitties at 14-under the card however a bogey on the par-3 16th saw him drop out off the pace.
Heading to the 18th hole, now two shots off the lead, Brown made a clutch birdie to be in the clubhouse at 14-under the card.
He watched on as Nitties made bogey on16 and then Geary on 17, he briefly held the outright lead, but a birdie on 18 from Geary saw them headed to a playoff.
The 18th hole was played sudden death with both players making birdie on their first trip down the stretch.
The second time down 18, Brown made birdie to claim his first title on the PGA Tour of Australasia.
"It was a pretty tough week, it was stinking hot Friday then today with this wind I am just relieved to be done," said Brown.
"I came second in the Australian PGA Championship a few years ago, it's about time I stood up and had a win, it feels great."

Birdies galore at the NSW Open
Birdies were the order of the morning at the Mazda NSW Open and there were plenty of them scored in the perfect conditions.
Amateur Justin Warren got things underway early coming through the turn at 4-under the card.An eagle on the par-5 18th was the highlight of Warren's round, it saw him finish at 7-under 65, equal the course record and lead the tournament.
This is the second year that the 19-year-old has Monday qualified for the NSW Open and showing that talent runs in the family Warren is the grandson of Barry, the 1957 Australian Amateur Champion.
Warren was joined in the lead by Web.com Tour player James Nitties who knew that a low score would be needed to be up the top end of the leaderboard today.
While Nitties and Warren held a share of the course record it wasn't for long.
Playing the group behind Nitties, Victorian Steve Jones fired an impressive 8-under 64 to set the new record and take the outright lead.

Anthony Brown has had a hole-in-one on the par-3 6th hole at Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club.
He used is 6iron to achieve the feat on the 169m hole.
Unfortunately for Anthony the Mazda CX-5 GT Akera is up for grabs on the 16th hole over the weekend while on the 11th hole a year's supply of Stockade Beer is on offer for a hole in one.
Anthony's playing partners, Ryan Haller and amateur Ben Eccles both birdied the 6th which means the group played the hole in just five strokes!
This is Anthony's second ace of the season. He also slam dunked the par-3 12th at the ISPS HANDA Perth International. - Tournament Update

US Amateur champion joins Tour legend at NSW OpenUS Amateur champion Gunn Yang will tee off with Peter Lonard tomorrow in the Mazda NSW Open being played at Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club.
Little known Korean, Yang, burst onto the international amateur golf scene when he became an unlikely champion at the US Amateur in August.
Starting the week ranked 776 in the world; Yang emerged victorious over 312 qualifiers ultimately defeating Canadian Corey Conners 2 & 3 in the final where he never trailed.
With a trip to Augusta National for The Masters now booked, Yang is playing as many Tour events as he can to earn experience.
"It's amazing to be in Pro events. I'm always learning, trying to find my weaknesses and where I need to improve. Just trying to become a better player that it my goal," said Yang.
"It's always hard to play against Pros, everyone is always in shape, they are good enough to be on the Tour but I am trying to do my best this week."
"The Masters is going to be another different level again but this week is definitely going to help, I need to get used to playing against the Pros."
Already this year Yang has played with Adam Scott in the Japan Open and this week he will play with Peter Lonard at the Mazda NSW Open.
